He always does this! Just run off without considering anyone's feelings!!

[Maka dials Beat's number and the tone rings....rings....rings....rings...voicemail. Frustrated, she hangs up and dails it again. Ring....ring.....ring...ring....voicemail. Maka growls and hangs up once more.]

Damn it! Just what could possibly cause him to do something stupid like this?!

[...yeah, Xion's more or less at a loss for words. once again, she stands there almost awkwardly. she waits a little bit after Maka's outburst before she speaks; she sounds very unsure, as if she doesn't want to say what she's about to suggest.]

Maybe something happened to him? I don't want to think that, but if he's not answering...

[She quickly shakes her head.]

No, no! Beat is strong. He wouldn't let anything happen to him. He's running away from something. There's gotta be a reason.

[she takes a while to think about what else they could do... she could understand Maka's determination.]

...Do you know anywhere he might be? Somewhere he'd go if he wasn't...feeling well.

[Her anger lessens as she shakes her head again. Her eyes fixate on the screen of the guide, for a while saying nothing.]

...What if it's me he's running from?

[It's possible. After all, he was upset long ago when he heard about Shinjiro's death and he ran off that time too. Maka slowly sinks to the ground, crouches into a ball.]

What if I'm the problem?

[She grabs the necklace he gave her.]

Why do you say that?

Beat cares deeply for his friends. So much that he will run away from them...

...

If he cares about you, he'll come back.

I know he'll come back. And I know he'll talk to me again. I know I'll...see him again.

[Tightens her grip on the necklace.]

-- But I hate it when he does this. I hate it when...he leaves me alone.

[Xion finally steps forward and places her hand on Maka's shoulder as a sign of support—she hopes she's not being invasive or anything. she's not the best at providing advice, but she figures now is more a time to try than any.]

Tell him that when he comes back.

[She looks up at her friend, her face completely red.]

--Huh?! Tell him? N-No way! It's way too embarrassing to let him know that!!

But he'll keep making you...feel like this if he doesn't know.

So I should just tell him that I like hi--

...I-I mean what I meant to say was...

Uh...

[Suddenly...confused herself somehow.]

[blinks—]

[did she say—]

You...like him?

...? What? N-No...no. I don't --

[Xion's no expert on feelings at all, but she can tell something's up.]

Really?

[Maka takes a few more minutes to consider this. Does...she? Well, he is important. VERY important to her. And the thought of him disappearing, makes her stomach turn into a knot. And when she thinks about how she feels when she's around him, she always felt so happy and just want to continue to be by his side. To be there for him when he's upset, hug him, or run to him if he's in trouble. That time they held hands, she liked how that felt. And when he stood by her the whole time in the hospital, it touched her. The sweet things he would say to her....his smile...his laugh....]

[..No. No. nononononononononoono!! She can't like him! She can't! Love is a temporary infatuation that will betray and hurt you in the end. She can't let that happen. She won't let that happen. There's no other option. She has to get rid of this feeling before it gets worse.]

[Maka wastes no time to get back on her feet. Voice sounding rushed:]

Xion. I-I'm sorry. I...have to go.

[And with that, she runs off away from her friend as fast as her legs can carry her.]

Maka, wait—!

[she almost makes an effort to chase after Maka again, but this time, she can tell that her friend didn't want to be followed. she stands there alone in the hallway for a while, and as soon as it's apparent Maka's not coming back, she turns and heads back toward the elevators.]

[this is the second time she's been run away from in a relatively short period. if Maka really did like that Beat guy... was that how Hope felt when he realized his feelings for her? ...she wouldn't know.]

[she sighs. she still had a long way to go in understanding feelings.]
